Ophthalmic Assistant Department: PH Ophthalmology Schedule: Shift: Hours: Job Details: Job Summary:Reporting to the Director of Medical Specialties this position is responsible for the daily patient care and flow of clinic activities. Position requires good understanding of ophthalmic practice and patient care. Knowledge of medical instrumentation and its proper care and usage needed. Requires good communication skills and compassionate patient handling. All employees are expected to be knowledgeable and compliant with Palmetto Healths values of compassion, dignity, excellence, integrity and teamwork. Education: High school diploma. Experience: One year of ophthalmic/optometric experience. Licensure, Registry or Certification Required: Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) certification preferred. Must obtain COA certification within 18 months. Special Training: Proficient in the use of email and Internet applications. Knowledge of practice management and word processing software. Must possess a working knowledge of managed care basics. Must maintain good communication skills. Key Responsibilities: Greets patient and escorts them from the waiting room to exam rooms; prepares patients for exam or treatment; assists the physician in all areas of patient care. Contacts patients with appropriate medical responses, schedules appointments, if necessary, according to established protocol(s). Assists with patient triage as necessary. Performs the following functions/procedures: A) Obtains medical and ocular history information and completes all required forms for physician exam. B) Performs eye exam to measure visual acuity, manifest refraction, applanation tanometry, pinhole acuity C) Measure, compare and test pupils D) Instill ocular medications. Assists physicians with routine surgical procedures. Maintains timely flow of patients. Maintains patient confidentiality; complies with HIPAA and compliance guidelines established by the practice. Attends annual CPR, OSHA and CLIA training programs as required. Performs all other tasks and projects assigned by the clinic and/or office manager. EOE/AA
